Highlights Hour One
God Rest Ye - Drew Davidsen & Friends:
As a youth, Drew
Davidsen trained classically on cello; later he developed a fascination
with the bass, but when he was 21 and serving in the US Navy, guitar became
his real interest. After completing his tour of duty, Davidsen turned
to establishing a career as a musician. 2007 saw the issue of his solo
debut followed by the 2009 release of Around (Again) - a project which
led to Davidsen's consideration as best new artist at the inaugural ASJA.
Now the hip guitarist combines catchy grooves with the richness of the
Christmas tradition on his latest entitled We 3 Stringz. Joined by a few
friends, the project features the likes of Chuck Loeb and Paul Jackson,
Jr. as well as contributions by some top notch Nashville cats! From among
our favourites on the disc, we have God Rest Ye, Davidsen's swinging take
on a Yuletide classic!

Last
Christmas - Till Brönner :
With a solo career
dating back to 1993, Till Brönner has been heralded as the most significant
German jazz musician of his generation. At 13, he discovered the music
of Charlie Parker and, after a classical education, he studied jazz
trumpet at Cologne's Music Academy. After just three semesters he turned
professional. His debut a couple of years later was a classic mainstream
recording that won a number of awards. Meanwhile, subsequent efforts
have updated traditional approaches to bebop by incorporating varying
elements of contemporary R&B and hip-hop. Drawing comparisons to Chris
Botti, Brönner is considered a master of his craft. A few years back,
he celebrated his vision of one of the oldest and most popular themes
in music with The Christmas Album. From that release we have an uber-smooth
offering entitled Last Christmas!

Good
Christian Men, Rejoice - Sam Stryke:
Hailing from Grand
Rapids, MI Sam Stryke issued his solo debut, a new age effort, back in
1991. Even so, Stryke took what turned into a lengthy break from the record
biz - he completed college and followed that by launching a successful
commercial career. After composing for film and TV, and having his tracks
used for Super Bowl commercials and award-winning ad campaigns, the Chicago-based
pianist returned to recording in 2002. Earlier this past year Stryke released
the cd Brunch, his 4th. Now as a follow up to that effort, comes the recently
issued Joy to the World, Stryke's second seasonal project to go along
with a well-received 2006 album that was simple titled Christmas. From
this latest offering we have Sam's gorgeous rendering of Good Christian
Men, Rejoice and a melody that can be traced back to In Dulci Jubilo from
the Middle Ages. The lyrics to the passage are thought to have been written
by the German mystic Heinrich Seuse and were translated around the middle
of the 19th century. According to folklore, Seuse heard angels sing the
words and joined them in a dance of worship - now Stryke's instrumental
offering captures all the magic and beauty of that image!
